Prognosis: 2 weeks

There’s a part of the “no chemo” discussion that I didn’t previously post…a part that many of you wondered about but were too afraid (or too polite) to ask: the prognosis. I felt like waiting to discuss it with Misty till we were home (hospitals are depressing as is and I knew I’d have to do a bit of encouraging afterwards) so it didn’t make it into my post from the hospital. When asked how long he expected Misty to be around, Dr. Raval said “a week, maybe two.” That was last Thursday. (don’t freak out…just read on)

Months ago Misty had made me promise to tell her when something like this came up. Today we had that discussion. Here’s kinda how it started:

Misty, I know you always wanted me to tell you when a doctor put a time limit on your life….but I’m very hesitant to do this. I don’t want to tell you because I KNOW he is wrong and I’m concerned that you will get discouraged by putting too much weight on this. Our doctors are the authority on medicine, not life. You are getting better. Everyday since the big seizure last week has been a little bit better. You are gaining weight… up to 97 lbs and eating great. And even if you weren’t showing improvement yet, I still know what the Bible says and I just can’t bring myself to ignore it:

“Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.” – James 5:14-15

“Whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments” – 1 John 3:22

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.” – Mark 11:24

“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases” – Psalm 103:2,3

“The angel of the Lord encamps around all those who fear him, and delivers them.” – Psalm 34:7

There is more, but that was the most important part. I did end up having to do some encouraging after we were done, but mostly I found myself reminding her of the promises she knew were from God. She has a few passages in the Bible that she feels God used to speak to her. So really, it wasn’t long before she was back into her portrait of faith and strength. I’m proud of her. We are both not really worried about her two weeks notice.

I’m posting this because, while I don’t agree with the doctors prognosis (even if I ignore God, I see Misty getting a bit better – hardly dying), I am getting a bit more serious about prayer. I don’t understand why, but God has set this world up where he actually responds to prayers of people. We quite literally have a part in the outcome of things (a part bigger than what our hands can do). So, I’m taking the prayer to another level. I haven’t eaten since Friday…I’m fasting for a week. I read the Bible pretty much all day and I pray continuously, whether out loud or to myself. I have temporarily put everything I was working on or doing on hold (sorry for those of you waiting for things from me). My home has become a bit more prayer focused (my mother-in-law, Claudia, who is with us most every day, is a huge support in helping us focus on prayer as well). I’m not telling you any of this to get a pat on the back (please no comments like that), but to set an example. I’m fasting for a week, can you fast a meal and pray for Misty? The book of Isaiah actually talks about fasting (when your living right) bringing on healing quickly (Isaiah 58). Also, this is a good time for us to reflect on our lives as a whole. The Bible says that the prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective (James 5). So I’m striving to live as close to that benchmark as I can. How about you? That’s more than just about Misty.

I know many of you who read this blog don’t put much stock in the Bible. There are so many who have been an encouragement and support to us, that don’t share the same faith as we do. I love and appreciate you all. Really, please keep visiting and sending notes and comments. But for those of you who do share the same faith as I do – let’s do this. Send out an email to your friends that pray and give them the website (I’m happy to give you a generic email to forward, or even a banner with a link to leblanclife.com for your website if you have one – just email me). Let’s generate a bigger buzz than we have already. God is going to heal Misty…and your prayers are going to play a part in it. And while you are praying, please don’t pray “God your will be done” – he has made his will clear in the verses above…he is the God that “heals all your diseases”.

Lastly, I don’t pretend that everyone who has prayed for healing has been healed. In the past, my mind has often been trapped between what I see in this world and what I know to be truth in the Bible. Faith is the evidence of things unseen and sometimes faith rebels against what is seen. Someday I hope to be able to reconcile why God doesn’t choose to heal everyone that asks. It is just one of the many questions I still have not found answers to. But for now, I’m going to hold to the words in the Bible…words I know are true. I guess I’m learning to trust God more than my eyes.

    Darren,

Yes, we are with you. Fasting and praying every day. We all know that God is the worker of all miracles and we know that He will HEAL Misty. Plus, not only how strong Misty is, but her strenght not only with the disease, but the faith in God that she, you and the family, along with the millions praying for her, will prevail. You are truely amazing Darren, and your strenght and love, lives in Misty, and she knows that also. So all will continue to be ok and keep healing her. You said you see her getting better, that is the start of her fabulous recovery. In God we trust~

    God Bless, loving all,

    praying and fasting for Misty,

Love, Aunt Amy, grandma and Lacey~

Yes, Darren, yes! I’m standing with you and Misty as well! I am in a state of excitement and awe in expectation of how God is going to further show His hand! I love you and Misty and little Miss Livi so much :) Be encouraged that the God of the universe is FOR you!

    Darren,
A couple maybe three months ago, I don’t know I guess I started to lose my reslove. I had been praying only for her healing but I waivered. I began to pray for you, and Olivia and for strength for a future without Misty. Few times in my life have I felt a rebuke from God so strong as the one I felt that day. As if God were saying “How dare you, how dare you limit me.”
God will heal her. There is nothing in the Bible that says when a person is sick to ask for God’s will to be done in their lives. We are to pray for healing. That is what I am doing. God will heal her.

(Jesus while speaking to his disciples)
    John 14:12-14
“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

I love you guys so much.

Stacia just sent me your website. I am not sure if you remember us … Brian and Courtney Girdwood? Jordan Anglin’s sister?

I am just sitting here in complete shock. I am starting TODAY to pray along with you and I will also add a link and post to my blog to get others praying.

I am so sorry you all are going through this. I am in awe of your faith. It is absolutely breath taking.

Please know me and my family will be on our knees daily for Misty.

  6. Rachel Edwards July 7th, 2008 10:35 am

    Hey Darren,
It’s Rachel Meyer from Messiah. My hubby, Nate Edwards, just sent me the link to your site. I am so sorry you and your family are having to go through this hardship. We have a few friends right now who are suffering from cancer and one who has had a major head injury – all of whom are Christians. It makes me question God – why? Why these good people who love you? Why the pain, anguish and suffering? But then I remember that He is bigger than me. His thoughts and ways are higher and greater than my finite understanding. It helps for me to remember that He’s the creator, the maker of all things – brains, bodies and even cancer – as well as the great physician and healer. But it is still hard. I read over your blog and just cried at the seeming injustice. But I think God is moving through this. He is bolstering your faith, encouraging you, spreading the message of your faithfulness to others and, from what you believe, is in the midst of working healing in Misty. I’ll be praying for your family and for healing. Continue to be faithful. You’re doing the best thing you possibly can do for her.
    Rachel

    Hey Darren,
My husband and I are going to be fasting with you. I’ve come to believe in the power of prayer, which is why I pray for you and your family every day. Not to diverge but my daughter’s pediatrician thought my daughter was autistic and never would speak. My husband has a very strong faith. more so then i did, but he encouraged me to pray and to believe that God will help Alexa, 2 months ago, like a light switch, literaly, on Saturday morning she started saying Mama and Papa and now is up to sentences. She is not autistic at all, she a normal happy little girl. We prayed for her a lot, our prayers were answered. I do believe, and I’ve been praying and I will stand by you and your family, we will fast with you.
    Much love,
    Rosie

  8. Kim July 7th, 2008 10:54 am

    Darren,

I am fasting and praying too and sending it around. We meet at my house for prayer on Thursday nights and have been praying for Misty every week, too. This week I was away in Canada, which was a great mission trip, depending on the Spirit of God. I was reading form John 11 about when Lazarus died, and a few things stood out to me. Jesus stayed where he was when he heard Lazarus was sick, even though He knew He could heal him, because He knew if He waited to raise Lazarus from the dead, He would be glorified in an amazing way, and people around (Martha and Mary and others), would believe in Him and salvation would be found. The people around did not understand this, and had no way to know how God would work, and they blamed Jesus for not responding in their way to this sickness. I was thinking of you guys the whole time. Remain faithful, God is mighty, He heals, He can and will do mighty things, and He will do it so He is glorified. I know He already has been glorified in your lives and I am sure He will continue to be. I hope this encourages some. The best part in that story is that Jesus grieved along with the sisters, even though He knew what great thing was about to happen, and it just shows His overwhelming love for us.

I added a link to my blog to get the word out and people praying.

I have read through a lot of your blog. I am sitting here in tears. I am just in complete SHOCK. I don’t even know what to say. Life just seems so unfair. I am SO sad and SO sorry. I just honestly do not even know what to say. I wish had words, but I don’t. Are there even words?

I am praying. I will be praying daily.

    Darren,
There is a hymn that has the phase, “my faith looks up to thee, thou Lamb of Calvery”. Our faith does look up to Him and reaches out to Him. God heals in many different ways and for Misty it is by faith and by God’s hands. He choose not to heal her through medicine (you see even He has control over medical treatments and responses to those treatments) but He choose to heal Misty through His own almighty hands. Reading Misty’s story each day makes all who read this blog find more faith in God’s everlasting love and healing. I will continue praying for Misty’s healing. I’ll pray even harder that each day shows more signs of improvement for Misty. Thank you so much, Darren, for sharing Misty’s story. I have passed this site on to several of my friends who I know will pray for Misty and of course my whole immediate family and church family is praying for Misty’s healing.

  11. Erin Delaney July 7th, 2008 11:07 am

    Hey Darren,
Just wanted to let you know I am praying for Misty’s healing every day. Almost everyday I drive down Hope Road and I drive past a man from our church’s house who is suffering from pancreatic cancer. Whenever I pass his house I pray for him and Misty. God can and WILL heal Misty if it is his will. When I was really sick this year and feeling discouraged, I cam across this verse in my bible that really encouraged me:

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
    -James 5:16

    God Bless,
    Erin

Philippians 1:9 “I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment., so that you can determine what really matters, and can be pure and blameless in the day of Christ.”

    Hey there Darren,
It is such a blessing and encouragement of faith to read your updates. Even in such senseless situations, God IS Soverign! I love you guys and think and pray for you, Misty, and Olivia often. It would be helpful if you have an email I can forward – I’ll be sending it to some churches and contacts in the National Guard.

  19. Ryan Keith July 7th, 2008 12:48 pm

Praying with you and standing at the foot of Jesus with you. As I wept this hour before GOd, pleading with him to intervene and heal your beautiful wife, I too (like so many) was affirmed that the miracle is not just in the healing, but how the person healed is changed forever for Christ’s service. Misty and you, friend, have my prayers and deepest respect. Our God reigns! Lots of love from Boston. -Ryan Keith

    Darren:

My wife and our two children attend First Assembly in Pennington, and I have noticed the prayer requests going out for your wife. The message I read today was absolutely awesome. I do believe that God rewards tremendous faith, and we are called to prayer in all circumstances especially for healing. You are an incredible witness to extreme faith in our Lord, and my prayer is that these prayers are rewarded in your wife Misty being restored to complete health. I will fast through lunch and be assured that my wife and I will lift Misty up together. Blessings to you Darren and to your wife Misty, in Jesus’ mighty name.

    Darren and Misty,

The Lord is infinite, limitless, all-powerful, all knowing… He has been and is in total control right now. Misty’s story has already been written before even one of her days came to be Ps.139:16.
2kings20, Hezekiah was dying and he prayed to the Lord as one who had pleased the Lord and the Lord gave him life! v.5 “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you…” Trust in, rely on, andlean on the Lord He is near you, even in your midst! You are supported in prayer and love…
“The one who calls you is faithful,”

    Dear Darren & Misty,

We have been praying for some time now and will continue to STAND with you,”…and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm…” Eph 6:13-14

“-the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” Romans 4:17-21.

“Stand” on His promises and be “fully persuaded”!

    In His love,
    Tim & Sandy McCoy

  28. Melissa K and family July 7th, 2008 2:11 pm

    Darren,

Today as I was praying for Misty the Lord showed me this, in Matthew 4:23-24 “Jesus went everywhere in Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the kingdom of heaven and healing all the people’s diseases and sicknesses. The news about Jesus spread all over Syria, and people brought all the sick to him. They were suffering from different kinds of diseases. Some were in great pain, some had demons, some were epileptics, and some were paralyzed. Jesus healed all of them.” I know Jesus is the Healer, He has healed me and my family. He saved my son’s life as an infant, and my father in law was healed of colon cancer (given a dire prognosis, only to find no cancer during his surgery 15 years ago), but this hit me hard today regarding Misty. I am confident that God is going to heal her. The Lord gave me a song a few months back, “Let the weight of your glory fall on this place, for we don’t desire just to see your face; but all of you – and the refrain says, “And as the glory of the Lord is revealed, all the people who will see Him will be healed.” I believe Misty’s healing will be what turns peoples eyes and hearts to God and that as His glory is revealed in her that through her healing “all the people who will see Him will be healed!” We love you and stand with you in faith.

    Love,

  29. Stacia Jacob July 7th, 2008 2:25 pm

    Darren and Misty,

We are praying for the Lord to heal Misty and we have faith that He will. I have passed along the prayer request to everyone we know and asked them to do the same. Many, many people are being transformed spiritually by being able to stand with your family and pray as ONE in Christ for Misty’s healing. We have no idea yet, how the Lord is using you both and your current suffering for such a greater purpose…one that will have a huge impact on this world for Christ and bring glory and honor to His holy name. Although none of us would choose the sufffering, we have a choice in how we respond to it and how we let Him work through it. You both are amazingly faithful and an example to all.

  30. Sarah July 7th, 2008 3:45 pm

I found your site through Storing up treasures in heaven’s site and just want you both to know that I will be praying for healing and strength.

I’m sending an email to my church family in Tallahassee, Florida, and I’m forwarding it to the pastor at Ignited in Lakeland- God is faithful and His Word is true. I cannot wait to see the full manifestation of His healing in Misty’s life. I and many others will be with you in fasting and prayer for God to heal. Remember how precious each of us is in His sight, and let that be an encouragement.

I know it may sound strange, but I am kind of excited about what God is doing in your lives. Does that make sense? I hate that it’s been so difficult, but He is using you as incredible witnesses, and the miracle of her healing will truly be a sign and a wonder. I hope you understand what I mean- I think you do. I love you both and I am fasting and praying with you.

    Love,
    Kathy

While this is my first post, know that your family has been on my mind daily. I learned of Misty’s health awhile ago, from her dad, at work. He mirrors the same love, devotion, and faith you write about on a daily basis. Families such as yours are a rareity – the amount of love and positive energy you put into this world is trult remarkable and uplifting. Your words and your family’s stength are an inspiration to us all. Thank you for keeping all of us apprised on a daily basis – for those of us who know not what to say; it answers so many questions we long to ask. Thank you again – my thoughts, wishes, prayers, hopes, and love to you & your family, for a complete recovery.
Our love – Christina & Jeff Palumbo

    Darren and Misty…

“BUT, the larger, more difficult, and more important fight on the Spiritual front still continues. We have not given up on Misty. I hope that you continue to join us in prayer. And do not let yourself be discouraged by this. This is just a step in the process. Now, when God heals Misty, there will be no question where the healing came from.”

For some reason, I keep re-reading these few sentences from your July 3rd blog. When I first read them, my spirit was quickened and a true hope and joy was birthed…I became very excited to see what God is going to do. And yet, I keep going back to those sentences. So today I asked God, “what do you have in those words that I (we) need to see?” He told me to do a mini Bible study. It’s a bit long, but that’s ok.

    “BUT, the larger, more difficult, and more important fight on the Spiritual front still continues.” Ep 6:10-18 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

“We have not given up on Misty” Gal 6:9-10 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
1Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

“I hope that you continue to join us in prayer. And do not let yourself be discouraged by this” 2Cor 1:8-11 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that He will yet deliver us; Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

“And do not let yourself be discouraged by this. This is just a step in the process”
Ps 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD

“Now, when God heals Misty, there will be no question where the healing came from.”
Ps 108:5-6 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth; That Thy beloved may be delivered: save with Thy right hand, and answer me.
Col 1:17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.

Yes, verses we have read over and over…now to encourage us ‘for such a time as this’.

“Ah do” to you, Misty and Livi. Praying and fasting with you for Misty. Terri

    Darren, Misty & Olivia,

It has been many years since I have considered myself a praying man, however I do believe that a divine power exists that is capable of things, amazing things I cannot explain. God is listening and healing Misty from the inside-out at this very moment. This act is also spreading and providing a witness to those with broken, shattered or absent faith, including myself.
Thank you for your example. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers.

    Stay strong and unabated,

    Dominick

Darren, thanks so much for this post. I will certainly be praying for you and Misty and your family. You can also know that your words have been an encouragement to me personally, as I’ve been wrestling through some difficult times as well. God bless you for your faith.

  52. Chuck Peters July 8th, 2008 12:44 pm

    Darren,
I am praying & fasting with you today. I’m deeply sad to hear about Misty’s condition, but I am fully trusting that God will act in a big way to show His power over death and disease.

A few weeks ago they sang an old hymn at a church I was visiting — Great is thy Faithfulness. The last verse hit me where I was at the time and I’m making part of it my prayer for you & Misty. “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.”

pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
they own dear presence to cheer and to guide
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
blessings all mine with 10,000 beside

Hang tough. God is faithful. He does hear and He does heal.
    I love you, man.

    Chuck

    Daren and Misty,
We have not had the privilege to met you in person, but through Justine, we feel that we know you well… we are family and we want you to know that we are with you in prayer, knowing that God is the Healer and that He WILL do a mighty thing in Misty’s life and yours. What a testimony this will be, many will come to the knowledge of our Savior through this mighty miracle of healing. Be encouraged, God is greater than the doom of human words. God’s promises are yea and amen! God be glorified.
    Yours in Christ
    Rich and Debbie

    Darren,

My prayers are with you, Misty, your child, and families. Cancer is a nasty disease, but there is hope. I am an 11 month (so far and in remission/good health) cancer survivor and I know how scary this time can be. God will help you and is always there for you. I heard about this website through friends of mine that live in New Jersey, and I really give you alot of credit for what you are dealing with. God Bless you, Misty and your family.
    -Justin

I join you in your steadfast belief that your wife will be healed. My husband is cancer-free today, and continuing to be healed daily from the surgeries, chemo, and radiation to find and destroy the unknown primary source of his head and neck cancer (never did find it, but it’s dead!). Maybe you know what radiation to the head is like. We do. That was two years ago. And “Nothing is too difficult for Thee!”

These words were posted in the radiation office:

“Ah Lord God, behold! Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched hand. Nothing is too difficult for Thee!” Jer 32:17

I read them day after day until they were blazed in my memory. They carried me through a lot: suffering, grief, loss, loneliness, illness, looking like death, feeling like death, but always remembering: “Nothing is too difficult for Thee!”

God has blessed me so richly on this healing road. I have many treasures to share, should you find yourself in need. He always provides everything we need, sometimes in the strangest and most unimaginable ways, He provides everything we need.

Tomorrow I will bring your story to twenty praying women in Scottsdale, Arizona. We will intercede with you.

I join you in your steadfast prayer for your wife. I stand with you as a wife whose husband was also stricken by cancer. I believe with you that both of our spouses will resume their joy-giving jobs as parents to our little ones. You are not alone in this fight. You are right to stand in the gap interceding for your wife’s healing until God tells you otherwise. And my prayer for you is that God blesses you in your inner being with the same mighty love with which He blessed me. It is truly amazing, oh so hard to describe, and more intimate than I knew anything could be.

In solidarity, from your sister in Christ, Anne

We were directed to your blog by Jai from CheckGuage. I sat for an hour crying as I read through your journal of the past few weeks. I am so sorry that you are having to walk this valley. I will be fasting and praying for Misty’s healing. I have added your banner to my blog, as well as a request for prayer for Misty. She and your whole family have also been added to our church prayer list. Keep trusting in Him!

  60. Nancy July 16th, 2008 12:15 pm

    Hello Darren

Thank you for sharing your story. I will pray for Misty’s total and complete healing. Your blog is a great idea and I was thinking of doing something similar. My husband who is 41 was diagnosed with cancer (adenocarcinoma of unknown origin) 2 months ago. He has tumors in both small and large intestines (lots of them), liver, and abdominal area. He cannot eat and is dependent on IV nutrition. We have two kids – ages 12 and 14. My husband and I are high school sweethearts – he is the love of my life! I refuse to let the enemy steal my husband’s health and happiness which is why I too am in constant prayer for his total and complete healing. I BELIEVE GOD WILL HEAL Steven and Misty!! No doubt in my mind. I’m at a point where I don’t even care about the test results anymore – it’s the report of the Lord that I am most interested in, and His report says Steven is getting better!

Keep the Faith Darren!!…you’re doing an awesome job!

email me anytime – we can encourage each other!!

PS…I love Smithville – been there many times. Your mention of it brought back many memories.

    Nancy

I’m praying too. I believe that God is faithful and will hear the praises and prayers of His people. Let’s give praise to God for what he has done and will continue to do!
